EMIRATES YACHUKUA NDEGE YAKE AINA YA A380

After taking delivery of the A380, Emirates Airways ordered 60 more Airbus planes

Emirates, the fast-expanding Gulf airline, announced Monday, July 28 it was ordering another 60 Airbus jets as it picked up its first A380 jumbo jet from the Airbus factory in Hamburg.
The newly ordered planes, A350 and A330-300 models, are smaller than the two-deck A380, the world's biggest passenger plane. At official list prices, the value of the 60-plane order is some $13 billion (8.25 billion euros).
The colorful handover ceremony Monday was the first from a new A380 delivery centre set up by Airbus in Hamburg to accommodate airlines during the weeks of testing before the money is handed over and a jet is flown away.
The only other A380s yet in service are two with Singapore Airlines. They were picked up from the Airbus fuselage factory in Toulouse, France, which divides up the tasks of manufacture with the Hamburg factory.
The chief of the United Arab Emirates airline, Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum, said the airline had ordered 30 of the A350 model and 30 of the A330-300 jets.
It had already ordered 58 of the biggest in Airbus' range, the A380.
"The future has arrived," he said of the jumbo's start of service, adding to hundreds of Airbus staff: "Thank you. You have made history."

Emirates expanding fast

Dubai-based Emirates has grown fast thanks to fares which are sometimes lower than those at its competitors, massive investment based on the UAE oil wealth and tight payroll costs with its aircraft crews hired from all over the world. Its pilots hail from 83 nations.
In the year ended March 31, 2008, it carried 21.2 million passengers, an increase of 3.7 million from the previous year. Emirates currently operates 117 planes. After the new purchases and retiring older planes, it aims to have a fleet of 150.
Emirates is the largest customer to date for the flagship of the Airbus range.
Al-Maktoum said the North American continent was one of the company's key markets and that the airline was pleased to be the first to enter the US market with the new A380.
The aircraft, which has seats for 489 passengers, was to leave the north German port city Tuesday, before being put to work on the Dubai-New York route from August 1.

BAADHI YA WAJERUMANI WATAKA UKUTA WA BERLI URUDISHWE

Almost two decades after the fall of communism, it seems not all Berliners are happy about the Berlin Wall being confined to the dustbin of history.
Every ninth Berliner would prefer the barrier which used to divide and encircle the city was still in place, according to a survey carried out on behalf of Berlin's Free University (FU).
Professor Oskar Niedermayer, 56, a political scientist at the FU, says that of the 2,000 citizens in Berlin and the surrounding state of Brandenburg who participated in the survey this spring, 11 percent in West Berlin and 12 percent in East Berlin considered it would be better if the Wall was still in place.
While the outcome might be surprising, Niedermayer suggests it is hardly a sensation. Only in East Berlin is there a significant change of attitude to be perceived, with 12 per cent of those asked wishing the Wall was still there, against 7 percent in a 2004 poll.
Nationwide, such sentiment was even more strongly expressed four years ago when surveys by two of Germany's leading research institutes showed 19-21 percent in favour of the Wall.
Prejudices still alive
Today, one part of the Berlin Wall is a backdrop for a beach bar
While fewer people today dispute the causes of German unification, some "Wessis," as West Germans are sometimes called, and "Ossies" (East Germans) still harbour prejudices against people living in the other half of the country, though apparently much less so than in the 1990s.
Then, it was not uncommon for people in the east to feel the former German Democratic Republic had been conquered "colonial style" by West Germany after the communist collapse in 1989-90.
Nowadays, only in fringe areas of Brandenburg are such sentiments occasionally expressed among small minorities, notes the survey. In the west, on the other hand, a cliche often heard is that people in eastern Germany indulge in too much "self-pity."
The survey, conducted for the FU by the Forsa Institute, also points to citizens who were fully integrated into the socialist system and who were born in East Germany before 1973 as being among those most likely to want the Wall back.
Winners and losers
Some Berliners would like to see the Wall back where it once stood
For years after the demise of the Berlin Wall there was discussion in the east and west of Germany about the so-called "winners and losers" of reunification.
In outlying areas of Brandenburg some 19 percent of people surveyed felt they were reunification losers, while 37 percent considered things would be better if the Berlin Wall and the former 1,120-kilometre inner-German border, once separating East from West Germany, had remained.
Only 3 percent of people in these parts regarded themselves as reunification "winners."
The dismantling of the Berlin Wall first began on the historic night of Nov. 9, 1989 to allow the ebullient masses to pass through to the west. But it was not until later in 1990 that the task of tearing down the barrier began in earnest.

Cleaning up
Army units set about demolishing 300 watchtowers, thousands of lamp posts and more than 80 kilometres of metal fencing from around the city barrier. Later a private company called Ava was called in to remove 160,000 tons of still remaining concrete from around Berlin alone.
At a glittering auction in Monaco in June 1990 segments of the Wall were sold, fetching a fortune. Successful buyers included cognac heiress Ljilijiana Hennessy and Jaguba Rizzoli, the widow of an Italian publisher.
Later, several Japanese entrepreneurs also arrived to buy graffiti-decorated slabs of the barrier.
Winston Churchill's grand-daughter also acquired eight pieces of the Wall, which were later displayed in the park of Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri, where Churchill made his famous "Iron Curtain" speech some 60 years ago.
But where is it ?

A common complaint of Berlin tourists today is that there are few visible traces of the Wall to be seen anymore. Centrally, only the Checkpoint Charlie Museum, with its history of daring Wall escapes still operates, attracting tens of thousands visitors annually.
Aware of foreign criticism on this point the Berlin authorities now plan to extend the 1.3-kilometer long Wall Memorial site on the city's Bernauer Strasse, where once the barrier cut off people living in houses on one side of the street from those on the other.
A spectacular new Wall Info pavilion will open there in late 2009 when the 20th anniversary of the barrier's downfall will be celebrated.

BARACK OBAMA AMWAGA SERA BERLIN

No nation can face global challenges such as terrorism and climate change alone, Barack Obama told a cheering crowd of some 100,000 in Berlin Thursday, July 24, calling for a new partnership between the US and Europe.
In front of a crowd that Berlin police estimated to be as large as 200,000, Obama acknowledged differences between America and Europe, adding that "no doubt there will be differences in the future.

"But the burdens of global citizenship bind us together," he said, speaking under the central Berlin landmark of the Victory Column facing towards the Brandenburg Gate.

Partnership among nations was not a choice but the only way to protect the security of Europe and the US, the Democratic Party presidential hopeful said.

Obama challenged a new generation of Americans and Europeans to tear down walls between estranged allies, races, and faiths in his soaring call for global unity.

"That is why the greatest danger of all is to allow new walls to divide us from one another," he said in reference to the Berlin Wall that divided the city from 1961 to 1989.

"Partnership is not a choice but a means of survival"

In a speech that risked being seen as presumptuous, considering Obama will not even face US voters for another three months, he warned of a world where partnership was not a choice but the only means of survival.

"No one nation, no matter how large or powerful, can defeat such challenges alone," he said, signaling that, if elected president, he would end what many Europeans see as the unilateral foreign policy approach of President George W Bush.

Obama also made clear he would not take the US into isolation.

"That is why America cannot turn inward. That is why Europe cannot turn inward," he said.

Crowds respond to Barack 'n' Roll

A party atmosphere gripped the crowds around the Victory Column monument as people listened to the man many hoped would replace George W Bush as leader of the world's most powerful nation.

A roar went up from the multi-ethnic crowd when Obama strolled confidently onto the stage to talk of the US-German partnership and the need to strengthen transatlantic relations to meet the challenges of the 21st century

Around 100,000 lined the boulevard linking the Victory Column to the Brandenburg Gate, where Obama had originally intended to speak but later dropped the plan after Merkel signaled her disapproval at the site being used for foreign election campaign speeches.

Many of those present queued patiently for over an hour outside 20 airport-style security gates where they were required to empty their pockets and dispense with drinks containers.

Once inside they were able to refresh themselves with plastic mugs of German beer and snacks as a pop band livened up the audience on a warm mid-summer evening.

No banners or placards were allowed on the strip guarded by around 1,000 police and other security officers as the Obama team sought to ensure that no unwelcome slogans were aired on US television.

But Democrats inside distributed US flags to their supporters and a green poster was held aloft by an Obama fan with the words "I Love Barack 'n' Roll."

Outside the entrance gates to the security zone, US Democrats wearing Obama '08 buttons launched a recruitment drive, yelling out "US citizens register to vote."

Obama talks of breaking down global walls

The strikingly audacious speech, in a fevered atmosphere in Berlin's famed Tiergarten, took the White House race out of US borders in a way never seen before, and was designed to portray Obama as a leader with unique global appeal.

"The walls between old allies on either side of the Atlantic cannot stand," he said, referring to festering divisions between Europe and the United States opened up by the US-led invasion of Iraq in 2003.

"The walls between the countries with the most and those with the least cannot stand," said Obama, in an address beamed live on US and German television channels and to viewers around the world.

"The walls between races and tribes; natives and immigrants; Christian and Muslim and Jew cannot stand. These now are the walls we must tear down," Obama said, drawing cheers and applause.

Obama's speech was a clear echo of former US president Ronald Reagan's call to then Soviet leader Mikhael Gorbachev in Berlin in 1987 to "tear down this wall," before the fall of Communism.

Full of passion, short of specifics

Despite its soaring cadences however, the speech was short on specifics. Obama's aides said he would not talk policy as that is the job of a president but his critics will likely slam him for empty rhetoric.
The Illinois senator rebuked both his country and Europe for blaming one another for strains in their relations, but took pains to insulate himself from critics back home who doubt his patriotism.
"I also know how much I love America. I know that for more than two centuries, we have strived, at great cost and great sacrifice, to form a more perfect union; to seek, with other nations, a more hopeful world," he said.

"In Europe, the view that America is part of what has gone wrong in our world, rather than a force to help make it right, has become all too common," the 46-year-old first term senator said.

"In America, there are voices that deride and deny the importance of Europe's role in our security and our future. Both views miss the truth."

Obama, who has a narrow lead in most polls of the US race, but trails McCain when voters are asked who would be the most credible commander in chief, used Berlin's triumph over division and totalitarianism as a metaphor for the world he hoped to forge.

"People of the world -- look at Berlin, where a wall came down, a continent came together, and history proved that there is no challenge too great for a world that stands as one," Obama said.

He also promised America under his watch would be serious about tackling global warning, a huge concern in Europe and a cause of rifts between the continent and the United States during the Bush administration.

Europe needs to do its part, Obama urges

But he also signaled he would demand Europe live up to its side of the bargain, asking for more help in the struggle against al Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan.

"America cannot do this alone," Obama said. "The Afghan people need our troops and your troops; our support and your support to defeat the Taliban and Al-Qaeda, to develop their economy, and to help them rebuild their nation.

"We have too much at stake to turn back now."

Obama is vowing to pour at least two more combat brigades into Afghanistan, which is currently being pummeled by a rise in extremist violence and attacks, if he is elected president -- with some troops to be redeployed from Iraq.

His aides have said that he believes NATO nations should provide more troops for the conflict, and remove operating restrictions on forces that are already there.

In an interview with CBS News on Monday during his first-ever trip to the war-torn nation, Obama warned conditions were "precarious and urgent" and also called on the Afghan government to do more to stabilize the country.
Before giving his speech, Obama on Thursday met German Chancellor Angela Merkel, who signaled clearly a day before that she would resist any pressure to send more troops to Afghanistan.

Merkel said Germany had no plans to go beyond pledges made last month for the NATO-led ISAF mission.

"I can give Barack Obama the good news that we will be boosting the mandate to include 1,000 more troops for the ISAF mission. We also just took over the command of the quick reaction force (in northern Afghanistan)," she said.

"Thus I will make clear that we are not shirking our responsibilities for engagement but I will also make the limits very clear, just as I have done with the current president."

An apparently worsening security situation in Afghanistan has seen troop deaths there exceed those in Iraq for the second month in a row.

Forty-nine soldiers from the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) and the separate US-led coalition died in combat, attacks or accidents in June, according to an AFP tally based on military statements.

By contrast, 31 soldiers including 29 Americans, were killed in Iraq in June despite the fact that there are more than twice as many troops there as in Afghanistan, icasualties.org figures showed.

AMINA CHIFUPA

Marehemu A.Chifupa
Hata hivyo alisema uchunguzi kuhusu kifo cha marehemu Amina haufanyiki kama ule wa Tume ambapo watu huitwa na kuhojiwa bali unafanyika kwa kufanyia kazi taarifa za mtoto wao alizosema wakati wa uhai wake. Alipoulizwa wanafamilia ilitaka Amina afariki lini ili iweze kuamini amekufa wakati muafaka alijibu;
Hata hivyo hakueleza mali zake alizoacha zina thamani kiasi gani.
