The Airbus A330, flying from Rio de Janiero, failed to arrive at Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris as scheduled at 11:15 am local time, and authorities have been unable to establish contact with its crew.
Air France has released a statement saying that flight AF 447, which left Brazil on Sunday with 216 passengers and 12 crew, sent an automatic message reporting a short-circuit, roughly 15 minutes after flying into turbulence.
Senior French minister Jean-Louis Borloo excluded the possibility of a hijacking. He added that he now expected the plane had crashed.
"It's an awful tragedy. It's dreadful ... Until 10.45 a.m. (0845 GMT) we could still have some hope, but at this stage the kerosene reserves have been more than used up," he said.
A search and rescue operation is underway off the Brazilian coast. A Brazilian Air Force spokesperson said the mission was launched on Monday morning after the plane failed to make radio contact.
