MANU YASHINDA

O'Shea powers in the shot which put his side ahead against Arsenal

Manchester United hold the edge in the battle for a place in the Champions League final after John O'Shea's early goal gave them victory in an absorbing encounter with Arsenal.

O'Shea scored from close range after Arsenal failed to clear a corner - giving United a slender but fully deserved advantage to take into the semi-final second leg at the Emirates next Tuesday.

Sir Alex Ferguson has made it his mission to make United the first side to successfully defend the Champions League title and they set about their old Premier League adversaries with relish from the first whistle.

And, while United will be happy to go to Arsenal in the ascendancy and having prevented Arsene Wenger's side from scoring a crucial away goal, they will have regrets that they failed to capitalise on the superiority they exerted throughout.Arsenal were penned in for long periods as United played at the high tempo that suits them best, and it was only a mixture of the excellence of goalkeeper Manuel Almunia and good fortune that kept the deficit within manageable proportions.

Almunia saved superbly from Wayne Rooney, denied Carlos Tevez with a double block and turned away Cristiano Ronaldo's header from six yards as United turned on the style in a dazzling first 45 minutes.

Arsenal managed to steady the ship after the interval, but they never seriously threatened United apart from a tame Cesc Fabregas shot and a volley from Emmanuel Adebayor after the break.

Ronaldo struck the bar from 30 yards with 20 minutes remaining as United continued to press for what could have proved a decisive second goal, but Arsenal survived and will still feel there is life in the tie yet, despite delivering a disappointing performance.

Bullish Wenger confident despite defeat

United never allowed Arsenal to get into their trademark passing rhythm, playing with more drive and energy than the Gunners, who were overrun in midfield at times and struggled to cope with the pace and variety of Rooney, Tevez and Ronaldo in attack.

Ferguson prefaced the game by suggesting it could be the "perfect semi-final" - it was not quite that for United, but you suspect they will be highly satisfied with the outcome.

United's fans certainly celebrated at the final whistle in a manner that suggested they feel they have taken a significant stride towards retaining the trophy they won so dramatically on penalties against Chelsea in Moscow last May.

Wenger, however, will harbour hopes that the undoubted talent in his side, kept under wraps for so long here, can turn things around on home territory.Ferguson's selection of Tevez ahead of Dimitar Berbatov suggested he wanted an energetic, high-tempo approach against an Arsenal defence undermined by injuries to influential pair William Gallas and Gael Clichy.

And that was exactly what he got in thrilling opening exchanges completely controlled by United and played out in a vibrant Old Trafford atmosphere.

Arsenal goalkeeper Almunia was in action inside the first 90 seconds, retreating desperately towards his goal to claw out Rooney's looping header.

And youngster Kieran Gibbs then showed early nerves as he slipped to let in Ronaldo, but United's winger flashed the ball across the face of goal with no-one on hand to apply the crucial final touch.

Arsenal were on the ropes, and it took a superb double save from Alumnia to deny Tevez after a slick exchange with O'Shea as United swarmed all over a Gunners side struggling to come to terms with the pace of the game.

Wenger's players never looked like surviving this fierce early barrage, and so it proved as United took a deserved lead in the 18th minute.

Arsenal failed to clear a corner, and when Michael Carrick's cross was deflected into his path by Mikael Silvestre, O'Shea lashed a finish high past Almunia.

Arsenal's only response was a low 20-yard shot from Fabregas that was comfortably collected by Edwin van der Sar.

Almunia was the keeper in constant action, and he performed heroics again after 28 minutes to keep out Ronaldo's header from an inviting cross by the industrious Tevez.

The only black spot in the opening 45 minutes for United - apart from not capitalising fully on their outstanding approach play - was a yellow card for Tevez after he collided with Almunia in a chase for possession.

Arsenal looked to have settled more after the break, and even felt bold enough to pose another brief threat after 62 minutes when Adebayor's volley flew over the top, although Van der Sar had the effort well covered.

United made a double substitution with 25 minutes left, sending on Ryan Giggs - making his 800th appearance for the club - and Berbatov for Anderson and Tevez.

And Ronaldo almost marked their arrival with United's second as he sent a thunderous right-foot shot against the crossbar with Almunia motionless.

Wenger made a change of his own, replacing the subdued Theo Walcott with Nicklas Bendtner, and then sent on Eduardo for Adebayor as the game entered its final 10 minutes.

The changes made little alteration to the pattern of the game, with Arsenal ultimately content not to concede a second after some harrowing moments.

It is advantage United - who suffered a scare late on when Rio Ferdinand went off after suffering a blow to the ribs - but the narrow lead still leaves the semi-final in the balance ahead of next week's return game.

SIKU 100 ZA OBAMA WHITE HOUSE

MR.PRESIDENT OBAMA

BUNDESLIGA

Heynckes charged with salvaging post-Klinsmann BayernAt the age of 63, and having coached nine other first-division clubs, Bayern's new coach Jupp Heynckes has lots of experience. But it may take more than that to clean up the mess Klinsi made in Munich. The curiosity about what the veteran Heynckes holds in store for the reigning but faltering Bundesliga champs was so great that Germany's leading tabloid, Bild, ran a live ticker covering his first day on the job.

And as if to give an indication of what's to come, his most notable action was to tell stars Luca Toni and Frank Ribery to quit messing around after a bit of practice pitch tomfoolery.

The message is clear: clown time is over.

Having won the league twice from 1989-1991 during a previous stint at Bayern's helm, Heynckes has been brought in to restore order, ensure Munich qualify for the Champions League and, if possible, engineer a last-minute fight-back to take the Bundesliga title.

A tall order with only four remaining weeks remaining in the season. And to fill it, Heynckes is going to need not only to institute a new post-Klinsmann culture, but to break a few negative streaks of his own.

So can he save Bayern? And if so how?

Personnel shake-up

The tactical void under Klinsmann extended so far that once-mighty Bayern forgot basics such as spreading the field.

That meant they over-relied on the individual talents of Toni and Ribery. Opponents could double- and triple-team both stars, creating the sort of frustration that Ribery vented in getting himself sent off in last weekend's 1-nil, Klinsi-crushing loss to Schalke.

Expect Heynckes - a former striker who played for Moenchengladbach and the Bundesliga's all-time third-leading scorer - to put more offensive firepower on the pitch, probably going with two attacking forwards instead of one.

That would mean a second chance for Lukas Podolski, whom Klinsmann for some reason seemed determined to reduce to the role of apathetic reserve.

And it also probably entails the end of the line for the non-entities - Lell, Ottl and Sosa - whom Munich fielded in its home humiliation by Schalke.

The most immediate problem is that Ribery is suspended for one match after picking up that red card. Players like Hamit Altintop and above all Bastian Schweinsteiger are going to have to shoulder more of the immediate load.

But a big question - one that's the key to Bayern's late-season gamble - remains. Can Heynckes convince his new charges to get on with the program?

Heyncke's most recent results in the Bundesliga are nothing to write home about, and no one has ever accused him of being a master communicator.

Indeed, he got along so badly with a trio of stars at Frankfurt, which he coached from 1994 to 1995, that they went on strike, refusing to play at all.

Although he did win the Champions League with Real Madrid in 1998, he was fired after one season for getting poor results in the Spanish domestic league. The same was true with Heynckes and Schalke in 2004 - minus, of course, the Champions League title.

And returning to Gladbach for the 2006-7 campaign, Heynckes started the season with four victories, after which the team failed to win another game. Heynckes stepped down in January, and Gladbach were relegated.

Bayern Munich gives him more talent to work with than most of his previous employers, but Heynckes will no doubt be nervous about getting his first three points to break his own personal winless streak.

And in one of those ironic twists to which the gods of football seem to be addicted, Heyncke's first opponents with his new team are the squad with whom he himself is most closely associated -- Moenchengladbach.

German police search British army bases in corruption investigation

Local police raided several British military installations in Germany on Tuesday. They suspect that military personnel have been accepting kick-backs from contractors for work done on the bases.Prosecutors in Wuppertal said that around 200 police officers and 50 officials searched British army premises in the towns of Moenchengladbach, Elmpt, Paderborn and Herford. Eight local companies were also examined.

German authorities suspect that some 21 civilian British military employees may have taken bribe money in return for contracts for work such as renovating and supplying army buildings.

A statement from the Wuppertal prosecutors' office said that payments may have also been made to non-existent shell companies for fake contracts, "costing the British government millions of euros."

The statement said British authorities were cooperating fully with German investigators, and that British military police had assisted with the raids.

The British military itself did not issue an immediate statement on the raids.

Daimler reaches deal to offload Chrysler

The German carmaker has posted a 1.3 billion euro loss for the first quarter of the year. The news came a day after Daimler said it would get rid of its final 19.9 percent stake in US auto concern Chrysler. On Tuesday Daimler announced losses of 1.4 billion euros ($1.8 billion) for the first quarter of 2009, citing a decline in sales of trucks and Mercedes Benz cars.

The German carmaker also is to give up its last remaining stake in its former US unit Chrysler and said it would forego the repayment of $1.5 billion of outstanding loans to the struggling Detroit firm.

A statement released by Daimler in Stuttgart on Monday said that a deal signed with Chrysler and the US pension authorities marked a definitive separation of the German and US firms.

"Under this agreement, Daimler's remaining 19.9 per cent shareholding in Chrysler will be redeemed and Daimler will forgive repayment of loans extended to Chysler, which were already written off in the 2008 financial staements," the statement said.

Daimler had sold an 80.1 per cent stake in the US carmaker to private equity company Cerberus Capital Managment in 2007.

Under the new deal Daimler has agreed to pay $600 million in three annual installments into Chrysler's pension coffers. The agreement is expected to reduce Daimler's second-quarter earnings before interest and tax by about $700 million.

In exchange Chrysler and Cerberus have agreed to waive any claims against Daimler, including allegations that Daimler "improperly managed certain issues in the period between the signing of the agreement and the conclusion of the transaction".

Chrysler, which is currently operating under US government aid, has been given until the end of the week to come up with a viable plan to keep the aid flowing or to face bankruptcy.

Bayern Munich sack coach Klinsmann

Jürgen Klinsmann

Bayern Munich have booted out coach Juergen Klinsmann after less than a year on the job, following a string of poor results.Klinsmann is to be replaced by Jupp Heynckes, who coached Bayern between 1987 and 1991. Heynckes is set to remain through the remaining five match weekends of the season. Klinsmann joined Bayern this season on a two-year contract, but has come under intense pressure recently due to the team's poor form.

Klinsmann thanks "for an exciting time"

That intensified after Bayern lost 1-0 at home to Schalke on Saturday, leaving the defending champions in third place."Of course, I am very disappointed at the moment," said Klinsmann in a statement on the Bayern website.

"Nevertheless, I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Bayern Munich, the fans, the trainers, the players and my colleagues for an exciting time."

"We have laid the foundations for the future. I still believe that the team can be German champions this season."

Championship hopefuls

Indeed, with just five matches left in the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich could still win the league title; as it stands right now, they're just three points behind table-topping Wolfsburg. However, before the season started they were heavy favourites to win comfortably.

There have been on-again, off-again rumors of Klinsmann's departure ever since the Bayern season got off to a disappointing start.

Klinsmann, who along with assistant coaches Martin Vasquez and Nick Theslof, will leave with immediate effect, was told of the decision in a meeting with Bayern team manager Uli Hoeness and chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge on Monday.

"We did not come to this decision lightly," Rummenigge said in a statement.

"But the results of the past weeks, the way in which they came about and above all, the situation we find ourselves in five games before the end of the season forced us to act out of a sense of responsibility to the club.

Heynckes returns from Bayern's past

"In Jupp Heynckes and Hermann Gerland, we have two experienced coaches who will take over the running of the team until the end of the season." Having guided Germany to third at the 2006 World Cup, Klinsmann's Bayern contract was set to run until June 30, 2010, but he only lasted ten months in his first role in charge of a domestic team and lost seven of his 29 league games.
